Slide 1 ISTE STANDARDS for Educators Introduction | NARRATOR: Hello my name is Aracely Rendon. I will talk about how this course Technology in the Classroom has changed my philosophy of education. |
Slide 2 Philosophy of Education | NARRATOR: Learning about technology and its impact on students' education has partially changed my philosophy of education. I would like to become a kindergarten teacher and one misconception that I had was that kindergarteners were too young to use technology. I used to think that the only way that I could use technology with kindergarteners was just playing videos that reinforced the lesson. After taking this course “Technology in the Classroom”, I have learned many technology resources that teachers can use with all grades, even with kindergarten. I believe that integrating the right kind of technology can support the development of every student's learning and skills. When technology is used in an appropriate way, students can learn, practice, and reinforce fine motor skills, letters, shapes, names, color recognition, reading, writing, eye-hand coordination. The principal component of my philosophy of education is play-based learning. However, the reality is that there are standards that teachers should accomplish and there is not enough time to play in every lesson. Therefore, I believe that technology could be used as a helpful tool for play-based learning. I consider very important that we do not overuse technology in our classroom, specially with young kids. Technology can be integrated into learning programs but it has to be used in combination with other learning tools. As a teacher, I believe that technology will help me to enhance learning activities and collaborate and engage with other educators. |
Slide 3 ISTE Standards | NARRATOR: ISTE Standards for educators are meant to guide teachers into incorporating learning practices and technology that will empower students, by promoting collaboration, challenging traditional approaches and preparing students to take control of their learning. |
Slide 4 2.1 Learner | NARRATOR: The first standard for educators is “The Learner”Educators continuously participate in professional development networks and workshops (in accordance to their interest); explore and apply new pedagogical techniques empowered by technology and reflect on their effectiveness; and stay informed in the state of the art of novel pedagogical techniques and scientific findings. All these aiming to improve students’ learning by leveraging technology and acquiring new pedagogical approaches. I will commit myself to keep learning about new pedagogical strategies. Nowadays, social networks are used by teachers, to share and learn about new resources and techniques. I will try new pedagogical methodologies, as soon as I learn about them. |
Slide 5 2.2 Leader | NARRATOR: The second standard is “The Leader."Educators develop their leadership abilities in order to positively impact students’ learning. They build a common vision with education stakeholders in order to empower learners through technology. They also work towards equitable access to all sources of learning, in order to meet a diverse student body and their specific needs. Finally, educators model for colleagues novel instructional practices that involve technology. In order to apply this standard in my classroom, I will constantly participate in PLC meetings, to either share and model new instructional methods or learn those from colleagues |
Slide 6 2.3 Citizen | NARRATOR: The third standard is “Citizen” Educators inspire students to behave politely and with responsibility, within the digital world. This includes creating experiences where students can practice good behavior while in the internet. In addition, teachers should foster curiosity on students, so they seek to increase their accumulation of knowledge. Students should also acquire critical examination of online resources, and learn that not everything on the web is true, nor safe. Finally, educators encourage students to not share their personal data. There are different web tools like padlet.com or flipgrid.com, where students can share opinions or have discussion. A teacher can assign a certain topic and ask students to provide their input, following certain digital citizenship rules. |
Slide 7 2.4 Collaborator | NARRATOR: The fourth standard is “Collaborator” Educators understand collaboration as a way to improve practice and share new resources. They seek to collaborate, not only with colleagues, but also with students. This collaboration requires planning time; collaboration should also include planning which technology resources can be used and how, in order to expand students learning. In this regard, engaging with expert by using nowadays communication tools also enhances the learning experience. Lastly, educators perceive parents as co-collaborators in their children’s learning. In order to promote collaboration among students, webtools like google slides or jamboard can be used for student collaboration. The teacher can assign a project, like creating a one-pager about a certain topic, to be created by a team of students. |
Slide 8 2.5 Designer | NARRATOR: The standard number five is the “Designer” Educators understand they are in charge of designing the learning experience. In order to effectively design their lessons, educators take into account students’ learning variability, the available technology that can be used in this regard, the content area standards and the pedagogical principles, in order to create innovative and engaging learning experiences. To better design my lessons, I will take into account my students’ strengths and weaknesses, and select the appropriate technological resources that can be implemented. |
Slide 9 2.6 Facilitator | NARRATOR: The standard number six is “The facilitator” Educators facilitate learning through technology that provided and enhanced experience. They also create opportunities that challenge students thinking, fostering a culture where they can take control over their own learning. In addition, educators understand that creativity can be taught and fostered. In my classroom, I will constantly challenge my students to be creative. By listening to other opinions, students may be able to analyze situations from different perspectives, finding creative solutions to a given problem. |
Slide 10 2.7 Analyst | NARRATOR: The standard number seven and the last one is “the Analyst”. Educators understand that decision-making must always be based on data. This data is often gathered from assessments, either formative or summative. Technology can be employed to make the data-collection process in a more efficient way. In addition, educators provide alternative ways for students to be assessed, in accordance to students’ needs. In my class, I will take time to do formative assessments as “Exit tickets” to determine the proficiency level of my students and to identify common mistakes. I will adjust my lessons according to this data. |

Hi Araceli, great way to work with children as you are using the ISTE standards. Using the standards really make us teachers think about what we want best for the students. It is great to see we want similar ideas for our class. Working with students to being creative, unique, and accepting other students opinions is a huge role we need to teach them. great job.
